Carol and Nev
Reviews and Feedback
Your show was so good, it touched me deeply, I gigged with the rest of the audience and at times the tears turned to little sobs, such a poignant story, lovingly brought to life by extremely talented actors. THANKYOU !!

Carol & Nev
Fun and ghostly look at Kiwi life
Natural talent and witty writing combine in the fresh Kiwi play, Carol & Nev which opened at 16th Ave Theatre this week.
Alex Ellis and Phil Ormsby play Carol and Nev, a couple separated by Carol’s death in 1984. Twenty-five years on, as Nev hits the road to attend their daughter’s wedding, he finds his campervan haunted by her ghost.
From the opening moments the on-stage energy of Ellis and Ormsby and their insightful portrayal of what time and loss can do to a person, held the attention of a full house on opening night.
Clever lighting and set changes complemented a Kiwi script that struck a chord with the audience as Phil attempts to summarise 25 years of New Zealand’s history.
In hearing Nev’s eye-opening explanation of what Carol has missed, the audience reflects in the differences on the New Zealand of the 1970s, compared to today.
It’s not all serious though, with plenty of laughs injected into the script as Nev grapples with the idea he is being haunted by his dead wife and could possibly be having a nervous breakdown. Dead or alive, they play out the humorous comments and quips most couples can relate to.
Carol & Nev offers a great night out for a bit of fun, escapism and a reminder not to let life dull the sparkle of youth.

Carol & Nev – a clever play written by Phil Ormsby (Nev) also starring Alex Ellis as Carol. Nev and Carol take the audience on an emotional roller-coaster ride in a campervan from North Island across Cook Straight to a beach on the South Island where Nev and Carol’s daughter is getting married. What makes this play so intriguing is Carol; Nev’s wife, had died 20 years ago! Great acting, ingenious props and a darn good yarn - theatre at its very best.
